Handmade Valentine Gift Box – Full of Hugs

valentines craft bog full of hugs

We have been making preschool Valentine crafts in my classroom for weeks now. When it came time for all my students to make a Valentine gift, I asked them what the best gift would be to give their mommies and daddies. After “candy,” “a new puppy,” and “a new car,” the next most popular suggestion was “hugs.” So I decided to create a Valentine craft for a homemade Valentine gift box.

How do you wrap up hugs into a handmade Valentine gift box? It’s a lot simpler than it seems.

First, of course, you need a box. It can be any size – I like shirt boxes, but it’s easiest to collect shoe boxes and cereal boxes from your students. (Send home a note a few days in advance!)

Before you start working on this Valentine kids craft, talk to the children about hugs. Can we see a hug? Can we pick it up and put it in a box? What about our love for our mommies and daddies (or grandmas and grandpas)? No – but because love and hugs are things we can’t see or put in a box, we can decorate an empty box and “fill it” with all the wishes and good thoughts we have for our loved ones and call it a box full of hugs.

To make a Valentine gift full of hugs, seal your box and cover it with wrapping paper, paper decorated by your student, or any kind of beautiful specialty paper you like. Add ribbons and bows. Glue on shimmering hearts or paste on stickers. Once kids have put all their finishing touched on their handmade Valentine gift, it’s time to write out the card.

Younger kids can simply write “HUGS” or “Hugs for Mom” and sign their name. Slightly older kids can come up with a message of their own. If you prefer to have a pre-printed message for your students to decorate and paste on after they make a Valentine gift, I found this adorable one on the internet:

This is a very special gift
That you can never see
The reason it’s so special is
It’s just for you from me.

Whenever you are lonely
Or are ever feeling blue
You only have to hold this gift
And know I’m hugging you.

You never can unwrap it
Please leave the ribbon tied
Just hold the box close to your heart

It’s filled with hugs inside.

If these preschool Valentine crafts aren’t enough to melt your heart, I don’t know what is!

Enjoy this homemade Valentine gift box, and Happy Valentine’s Day!
